It’s the Season … and Everyone Wants a Deal; but Buyer Beware.

We are now in the mist of renovation and repair project season. If we had a penny for all the inquiries received and stories heard in the past 4-5 months … everyone is looking for a deal! There’s nothing wrong with being a savvy shopper, but it is extremely important to read the fine print before signing on the dotted line.

Beware the undercut deal that appears too good to be true. In most cases, if it looks too good to be true – it often is! If someone’s cost is that much less, there is usually a reason why. For instance, because flooring looks the same, it doesn’t mean that it wears the same, has the same warranty or the same properties. Again, there is a reason for the price difference!

We often offer different repair options based on the client’s budget and their desired level of urgency. Looking only at the price can lead to a huge disappointment. Look at what exactly you are getting for the price. We often have this discussion with our clients so that they make an informed decision.

It’s not all about the price! You cannot expect to get the same level of service at a substantially lower price. Homeowners that go with the lowest quote, quite often are not happy with the quality of work. Then, they may need to find someone else to fix the poor work.

It’s a fact – If you want the cheapest, you typically are sacrificing quality or service. A common wise advice in the industry is: You have three options – the best quality, best service, and the best price. Pick which 2 are most important to you because all three do not readily go together. A buyer must uncover his/her desired balance between cost and value.

We have had hundreds of service calls and projects over the past nine years which are the result of a client needing to fix what was done by the lowest priced contractor they hired previously. Low costs up-front can potentially end up costing you a whole lot more in the long run.

A quote we’ve heard several times in the past, and which we find certain is: “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur!”. Think about it, and look for a balance. While price isn’t the only determining factor in a project, it is a big deal. Try to find a contractor who can speak to the value they deliver and explain what they offer that sets them apart from the competition… and why that matters to you.
